Bas de Meijer
I was born on May 18th, 1970 in a small place called Den Dolder. At first my main interest was automotive technology. But with an uncle who was photographer and a grandfather who had a photostore, my interest in photography kept on growing. When I was 12 years old, it was the first time I saw a dark room and I made my first print.
Since my love for cars was still bigger, I gratuated as Automotive Engineer. SInce 1992 photography became my biggest passion. Slowly I have got some photojobs, amongst others as photojournalist for the local newspaper. Nowadays photography is my main job and I work as freelance photographer. Since 2002 I am also an editor for several Dutch photomagazines, for whom I am testing (mainly) digital cameras. I have no degree in photography however.
Furthermore I maintain a daily updated weblog with and about photography at

Photography
I especially like to work as documentary photographer or photojournalist, but I like editorial portraits, streetphotography and music and theatre photography as well. People are playing a central role in my photography. Emotions and the acting of people are major ingredients. At location I am at my best, since improvisation is one of my strengths. I try to keep any manipulation to the minimum, during and after taking the photos. I photograph the things as they appear in front of my camera. Ambient light is my favourite light. The only thing I change in the photos is the colourbalance and contrast. Dodging and burning are only used to put an accent on a part of the photo.
